What is anxiety?

Anxiety is a response to fear, stress, or unfamiliar situations. It can be normal, like worrying about tests or presentations, but can also be debilitating if you have an anxiety disorder. This type of anxiety can adversely affect your ability to function and keep you from sleep, socializing, and leaving your house.

What causes anxiety?

There are many causes of anxiety disorders. Their potential causes, and treatment options, including non-drug therapy modalities such as cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness, and psychodynamic therapy. Specific disorders mentioned include generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and social phobia. Contributing factors to anxiety disorders may include brain chemistry, prolonged stress, genetics, past trauma, substance abuse, and medication side effects.

How do you treat anxiety disorders?

At Progressive Psychiatry Services, trained therapists treat mild to moderate anxiety with a variety of non-drug therapy modalities, including:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • Mindfulness (especially for sufferers of PTSD)
  • Psychodynamic therapy

These innovative modalities aim to provide useful stress management techniques to pinpoint causes and alleviate overall anxiety. In more severe cases, medication may be prescribed in addition to one or more of the aforementioned therapeutic methods.
