Addiction Q & A

What is addiction?

Addiction is a disease affecting the brain, causing uncontrollable behavior. It is a chronic illness that requires ongoing treatment to achieve a successful recovery. Even those who recover are at risk of relapse. The illness alters the brain, making quitting without assistance nearly impossible. Addicts deserve compassionate and professional care.

Who is at risk for addiction?

Addiction risk factors include genetics, environment, and development. Genetics contribute to almost half of the risk, while environmental factors like family, friends, and economic status can also increase the risk. Taking drugs at a young age is especially harmful because the parts of the brain responsible for decision-making and self-control are still developing.

How do you treat addiction?

At Progressive, we personalize treatment plans for mental disorders including addiction to alcohol, gambaling, opioids, stimulants, cocaine, and polysubstance abuse. Our therapists use talk therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, family counseling, and medication when needed. We also provide substance abuse support groups and offer Suboxone® and Vivitrol® treatment for opioid abusers.
